Coaching Code of Ethics

  • I will encourage, teach and promote sportsmanship, leadership and teamwork.
  • I will lead by example both on and off the field demonstrating fairness and sportsmanship to all players. I realize that I am helping to shape the character and integrity of young people.
  • I will place the emotional and physical well being of my players ahead of a personal desire to win.
  • I will treat each player as an individual, keeping in mind the large range of emotional and physical development within the same age group.
  • I will treat each player the way I would want my child to be treated.
  • I will do my best to provide and ensure a safe playing situation for my players.
  • I will do my best to organize practices that are fun and challenging for my players.
  • I will be knowledgeable and comply with the Southwest Michigan Rocket Football Rules and teach the rules to my players.
  • I will remember that I am a youth football coach and that the game is for children and being played by children.
  • I will make certain that all players are given an opportunity to play at least the required minimum plays set forth by the game rules.
  • I will treat opposing teams, coaches, volunteers and referees with the utmost respect at all times.
  • I will remember that the head coach is responsible for the conduct of their players, parents and assistant coaches.
  • I will be knowledgeable and comply with the concussion protocol set forth by the Michigan Sports Concussion Law.
  • I will be familiar and comply with the St Joe Rocket Football policy for Managing Heat and Humidity which is more stringent than the MHSAA policy.
  • I will not initiate physical contact with any player for disciplinary reasons, when I appear angry or touch a player’s facemask to get their attention.
  • I will substitute freely to give all players a chance to play key positions when the mercy rule is in effect.
  • I will recognize that winning is a very important goal in coaching football, but it should not be the only goal.
  • I will never verbally abuse or criticize a player, but will use constructive coaching and teaching methods.
  • I will make sure football is fun, teach fundamentals and good sportsmanship while doing my part to keep my players safe so that kids develop a love for the game of football.
  • I understand that coaching young people is a privilege and I will take that responsibility seriously.
  • I understand that I am an ambassador of the game of football and a role model for my team and that my behavior and actions will have a great influence on the future participation of these young players.
